Google Ads for Deck Staining: Does the Math Actually Work?

Google Ads for deck staining: what a deck job is worth in 2026, why the CPC math is tight, and how painters should structure and time the campaign.

Published September 4, 2026 · PaintingPPC

Google Ads for deck staining works, but only if you run it as an add-on to your main painting campaign instead of a standalone business. A deck staining job averages around $750 nationally, and home improvement clicks now average $8.33, which leaves very little room between what you pay for the lead and what the job pays you. The painters who make deck and fence staining profitable on paid search are the ones who use it to open a door to bigger exterior work.

I run PaintingPPC, a Google Ads agency that works only with painting contractors. Deck staining is the service line where I have to talk owners out of a campaign more often than into one. Here is the honest math.

What is a deck staining job actually worth?

Less than most painters assume. HomeGuide puts the cost to stain a deck at $550 to $1,250 for most projects, national average near $750, or roughly $1 to $4 per square foot. Fence staining runs a little better. Ergeon puts a typical fence staining project at $655 to $2,118.

Compare those tickets against the rest of your board.

Service lineTypical project valueWhat it means for paid search
Deck staining$550 to $1,250Thin. Needs low cost per booked job or an upsell
Fence staining$655 to $2,118Better, especially long runs of fence
Interior repaint$2,000 to $6,000Comfortable room for ad cost
Cabinet refinishing$4,000 to $10,000Best ratio of ticket to click cost

That table is the whole argument. A click costs the same whether the homeowner wants a deck stained or a kitchen refinished. Google does not discount the auction because your ticket is small.

Does the click math work for deck staining?

Barely, and only in the right market. WordStream’s 2026 Google Ads benchmarks put the average cost per click in Home and Home Improvement at $8.33, up about 6 percent year over year.

Run it forward as a modeled example, not a promise. 100 clicks at $8.33 costs $833. If 8 percent become a call or form fill, that is 8 leads at about $104 each. Close half and you booked 4 jobs at roughly $208 each in ad cost. On a $750 deck, 28 percent of revenue is gone before you buy a gallon of stain.

Some painters can live with that. Most cannot. Staining is prep heavy and weather dependent, so your gross margin on a deck is usually thinner than on an interior repaint, and a number that looks survivable on the revenue line is ugly on the profit line.

The version that works looks different in one of three ways. Your market is cheap and clicks run $3 to $5 instead of $8. Your average deck ticket is well above $1,000 because you sell full strip, sand, and two coats. Or the deck is the first job and not the last one, which is the real play.

How should a painter structure Google Ads for deck staining?

Separate campaign, separate budget, its own conversion tracking. Do not bury deck keywords inside your exterior painting campaign, because the mixed data will hide which service is actually paying.

Ad groups worth building:

  • Deck staining. deck staining near me, deck stainers, deck staining company, cost to stain a deck
  • Deck refinishing. deck refinishing, deck sanding and staining, deck restoration
  • Fence staining. fence staining near me, fence painting, fence stain contractor
  • Deck sealing. deck sealing, deck waterproofing

Keep them tight and give each ad group ads that repeat the exact service, the same discipline covered in Google Ads keywords for painters.

Negatives matter more here than on any other painting campaign, because deck searches are crawling with people who want to buy stain, not hire you. Block: behr, cabot, sherwin, olympic, thompsons, best deck stain, how to, diy, sprayer, lowes, home depot, composite, trex, deck builder, deck repair, cost calculator. Full approach in negative keywords for painting contractors.

Set a low daily budget and leave it low. Deck staining is where you test, not where you scale.

When should deck staining ads run?

Two windows, and September is one of them. Spring is when homeowners notice the deck looks terrible. Early fall is when the weather is actually right for the work.

The best conditions for staining a deck sit between 50 and 90 degrees with low humidity, and the temperature has to hold for 24 to 48 hours after application so the stain cures. September and early October hit that better than a humid July. Once overnight frost starts you are done, and dew alone can ruin a finish.

So the schedule for most of the country: turn on in March or April, hold a smaller budget through summer, push again from late August through mid October, then shut it off before the first hard frost instead of paying for clicks on work you cannot do.

If you are reading this in September 2026, you have roughly four to six weeks of usable staining weather in most northern markets and longer in the south. Enough time to fill a crew, not enough to build a campaign from scratch and learn on it.

What is the real reason to run deck staining ads?

The second job. A homeowner who pays you $800 to stain a deck just watched your crew work in her backyard for two days, and she has a house that needs painting sooner or later.

That is why I treat deck campaigns as customer acquisition, not a profit center. If the deck breaks even on ad cost and produces a repaint in the next 18 months, the campaign was a bargain. If it is a one-and-done and nobody follows up, you bought an expensive way to be busy.

So the follow-up matters more than the bidding. Photograph the finished deck. Ask for the review. Put the customer on a list and email her in February when interior season starts. None of that is a Google Ads setting, and all of it decides whether the campaign made money.

You cannot answer any of this without tracking the phone. Deck leads call more than they fill out forms, and without call tracking you will never separate deck revenue from exterior revenue, or know your real cost per booked job on either one.

FAQ

Is deck staining profitable for a painting contractor? It can be, but the margin is thinner than interior or cabinet work because staining is prep heavy and weather dependent. With a national average project value near $750, a deck job leaves little room to absorb a $150 to $250 acquisition cost. It works best priced as a full strip, sand, and two coat service, or when it feeds a larger job later.

How much do deck staining leads cost on Google Ads? Expect home services pricing generally, where clicks average $8.33 in 2026 and cost per lead commonly lands between $60 and $250 depending on market and competition. Cheaper metros and tighter campaigns come in at the low end. Cost per booked job then depends on your close rate on estimates.

Should deck staining have its own Google Ads campaign? Yes, if you run it at all. A separate campaign gives it its own budget, schedule, and reporting, so you can see whether deck work pays without exterior repaint numbers covering for it. Mixing the two is how painters subsidize a losing service line for a year without knowing.

Is September a good time to advertise deck staining? Yes. Early fall gives the best combination of moderate temperatures and low humidity for stain to cure properly, and homeowners are trying to get the deck handled before winter. The window closes when overnight frost arrives, so most northern markets have four to six weeks from Labor Day.

The blunt version

Google Ads for painting contractors pays best on high ticket work, and deck staining is not high ticket work. Run it if your market is cheap, your ticket is above average, or you have a real system for turning a deck customer into a repaint customer. Otherwise put that budget behind exterior and cabinet keywords, where the same $8 click buys a shot at a much bigger job.

If you want a straight read on whether deck staining deserves a campaign in your market, book a call and we will look at your numbers. We work with one painter per market, so the read you get is not one we are also giving your competitor.
