Google Ads for Interior Painting: The Campaign That Carries Your Winter

Google Ads for interior painting: when homeowners actually decide, how to budget through the year, and why interior deserves its own campaign.

Published July 17, 2026 · PaintingPPC

Google Ads for interior painting works on a different calendar than the rest of your business. Interior painting demand has two decision peaks, one in late winter and one in late summer, and the projects themselves finish in waves through spring and again before the holidays. A painting contractor who structures interior as its own campaign, and funds it hardest when exterior demand is quiet, gets a steadier calendar and a cheaper cost per booked job than one who lumps every service into a single campaign.

I run Google Ads for painting contractors, and interior is the campaign that keeps crews busy when the exterior season winds down. We already covered exterior painting, cabinet refinishing, and commercial work as separate plays. Interior is the last piece, and it is the one most painters treat as an afterthought. This post covers when interior demand actually happens, how to budget for it month by month, and how to build the campaign.

When do homeowners actually hire interior painters?

Earlier and later in the year than most painters expect. The Home Improvement Research Institute’s 2025 Project Decision Study found the idea to do interior painting peaks in February (24% of homeowners) and June (20%). A majority of go-ahead decisions cluster in February, March, April, and August. Then the work itself: 30% of interior projects start in March, another 18% in May, and completions peak twice, 24% in April and another 24% in November and December combined.

Read that again. There is a second decision peak in August and a completion wave in November and December. That is homeowners repainting before Thanksgiving guests and holiday photos. If your interior ads are asleep in late summer because your crews are busy on exteriors, you are skipping the auction that fills your November and December calendar.

One more HIRI number that matters: 82% of interior painting projects are done with a contractor, with only 9% pure DIY. Interior painting searches skew heavily toward buyers, not weekend warriors. The same study found that among homeowners spending $5,000 or more on projects, the median interior painting spend was $12,000. Those are mid-to-large projects, so the number skews high, but it tells you the top end of what a single booked interior job can be worth.

How does interior seasonality compare to exterior?

They are close to mirror images, which is exactly why they need separate campaigns and separate budgets. Here is the year side by side, built from the same HIRI decision data:

MonthsExteriorInterior
January to FebruaryIdeas forming, little buyingIdea peak (February), decisions starting
March to MayPeak decisions and hiring30% of projects start in March, completions peak in April
June to AugustWork peak, late decidersJune idea peak, August decision peak
September to OctoberSecond decision peakPre-holiday projects getting quoted
November to DecemberMostly deadCompletion wave before the holidays

Right now, in mid July, the practical move is simple. Exterior is carrying itself. Interior is the campaign to keep warm and then ramp in August, because HIRI’s data says August is a real interior decision month and the November and December completion wave gets hired in late summer and fall. Painters who wait until their exterior backlog dries up in October to think about interior ads have already missed the decision window, the same mistake in the other direction that the exterior post warns about.

How should a painter structure a Google Ads campaign for interior painting?

Give interior its own campaign with its own budget, keywords, and ads. A combined “painting” campaign lets Google spend your money wherever clicks are easiest, which in summer means exterior terms, and you lose the ability to push interior spend up in August and January without touching everything else.

Inside the campaign, follow the same rules as the keywords post: tight ad groups by intent. “Interior painters near me,” “interior house painting cost,” “bedroom painters,” and “ceiling painting” are different searches that deserve different ads. Phrase and exact match only.

Negatives need their own attention because interior has a DIY research problem. Even though 82% of projects go to contractors, the search volume includes plenty of people pricing a DIY weekend. Block “how to,” “yourself,” “best paint for,” every paint brand name, and color research terms like “color ideas” and “paint colors for bedroom.” Someone browsing colors is months from hiring anyone. The full category list is in the negative keywords post.

On the landing page, put your room pricing logic in plain sight. Homeowners searching interior terms are price shopping: Angi’s 2026 data puts the average cost to paint a room around $1,100, with a typical range of $200 to $2,000, and HomeGuide shows most pros charging $2 to $6 per square foot. You do not have to publish your exact prices, but a page that says “most bedrooms run X to Y” converts price shoppers better than a page that hides the ball. The rest of what a converting page needs is in the landing pages post.

What is a realistic budget and cost per booked job for interior painting ads?

Expect the same click prices as the rest of painting, roughly $13 to $14 per click on national benchmarks, but smaller average job sizes than exterior, so the math needs more attention. A whole-house interior repaint can rival an exterior job, but a lot of interior leads are one or two rooms. At $1,100 average per room, a two-room job around $2,000 to $2,500 does not leave room for a sloppy funnel.

That is exactly why interior campaigns live or die on measurement. Cheap interior leads that turn into $400 accent-wall quotes are worse than fewer, better-qualified leads for whole-home repaints. The only way to see the difference is tracking every call to the job it became, which requires call tracking and a cost per booked job number for the interior campaign by itself, separate from exterior. That per-campaign view is how we measure every account at PaintingPPC, because a blended number across services hides which campaign is actually earning its budget.

FAQ

Do Google Ads work for interior painting? Yes, and the buyer intent is strong: HIRI’s research shows 82% of interior painting projects are completed with a contractor, so most people searching interior painting terms intend to hire. The keys are a dedicated interior campaign, aggressive DIY and color-research negatives, and tracking leads through to booked jobs rather than counting raw calls.

When is the best time to run Google Ads for interior painting? Interior decisions peak in February, March, April, and August, so those months deserve your heaviest interior spend. A second wave of projects completes in November and December, and those jobs get hired in late summer and fall. Interior is also the natural place to move budget in winter when exterior demand drops.

Should interior and exterior painting be in the same Google Ads campaign? No. Their demand curves are nearly opposite, and a shared budget means Google chases whichever clicks are cheapest that month instead of following your calendar. Separate campaigns let you scale interior up in August and January and exterior up in March without rebuilding anything.

How much does an interior painting job cost a homeowner in 2026? Angi’s 2026 figures put the average room around $1,100 with a range of $200 to $2,000, and HomeGuide reports $2 to $6 per square foot for professional work. Whole-home interior repaints run far higher, and HIRI found a $12,000 median among homeowners spending $5,000 or more on mid-to-large interior projects.
