AI Max for Painters: Should a Painting Contractor Turn It On?
AI Max for painters is the switch Google keeps pushing. What it does to a painting company's search terms, when to test it, and what to lock down first.

AI Max for painters is Google’s one-click bundle that lets a painting contractor’s Search campaign match queries beyond its keyword list, rewrite ad headlines with AI, and send clicks to whatever page on the site Google predicts will convert. It is not a new campaign type. It is a switch inside the Search campaign you already run. My answer for most painting companies: leave it off until the account has clean call and form tracking plus a thick negative keyword list, then test it in one campaign against a control, and judge it by cost per booked job, not by how many “conversions” the dashboard shows.
I run PaintingPPC, and Google Ads for painting contractors is all we do. September 2026 is the month this stopped being optional: Google began auto-upgrading some Search campaigns to AI Max on September 1. If your agency has not mentioned it, ask why.
What is AI Max for Search campaigns?
AI Max is an optimization layer with two halves. Google’s documentation describes the first as search term matching: broad match plus “keywordless” matching that learns from your keywords, ads, and landing pages to show your ad on searches your list would never have caught. The second is asset optimization: text customization, which generates headlines from your page copy, and final URL expansion, which can send the click to a different page than the one you chose.
Turn AI Max on and all three turn on together. One line in Google’s doc matters more than the rest: when final URL expansion is on, pinned headlines are not respected. If you pinned “Licensed & Insured Painters in [City]” to position one because it makes the phone ring, AI Max is allowed to drop it.
Why is Google pushing AI Max on painters right now?
Because the migration has a calendar. Search Engine Land’s timeline lays it out: since August 3, 2026 you cannot create the old campaign-level broad match setting or standalone automatically created assets. From September 1 to 30, campaigns using those settings are migrated to AI Max in place. Dynamic Search Ads follow in February 2027.
If your painting account never used those settings, nothing migrated. Google’s pitch is real but it is an average. Google’s launch post claims 14 percent more conversions at a similar cost per conversion, and 27 percent for accounts that were mostly exact and phrase match. Read the footnote: internal data across non-retail advertisers, counting conversions, not booked jobs. A “conversion” in your account might be a form fill from someone painting their own cabinets.
What does AI Max do to a painting contractor’s search terms?
It expands them toward research queries. A painting keyword list is tight on purpose. Keywordless matching reads your landing page, sees “paint”, “colors”, “prep”, “primer”, and starts matching people who are painting their own house.
One documented head-to-head test on a service business account (not a painter, one account, 14 days, so a pattern and not a law) showed AI Max producing 41 percent more form fills and 43 percent fewer CRM-qualified leads than the manual control. Cost per qualified lead rose 76 percent. The extra volume came from “how does X work” searches. Every painter already fights that traffic, and AI Max turns the list in negative keywords for painting contractors from housekeeping into the main brake on the account.
| Plain Search campaign | Search campaign with AI Max on | |
|---|---|---|
| Which searches you show on | Your keyword list plus match-type expansion | Your list plus broad and keywordless matches from page content |
| Headlines | The ones you wrote, pinned if you want | Yours plus AI-generated, pins ignored when URL expansion is on |
| Landing page | The one you chose | Any page Google predicts will convert, unless excluded |
| Budget-limited accounts | Works fine | Google itself says AI Max will not be effective |
| What it optimizes toward | Your conversion actions | Your conversion actions, so bad tracking gets amplified |
AI Max is a volume machine that chases whatever you told Google a conversion is. If a 20-second call counts, AI Max will find you a lot of 20-second calls.
Should a painter turn AI Max on?
Not by default. Turn it on only if four things are already true.
Your conversions are real. Calls over 90 seconds, tracked forms, and ideally booked-job outcomes fed back through offline conversion tracking. Call tracking on the landing page is the minimum. Otherwise you are handing the algorithm a bad target and asking it to hit it harder.
Your negative keyword list is thick. DIY, jobs, suppliers, paint colors, “how to”, auto body, art classes. Build it before you flip the switch.
You are not limited by budget. Google says outright that AI Max will not be effective in a budget-limited campaign. A painter who hits the daily cap by 2 p.m. gains nothing from finding more searches to lose.
You have a control. Duplicate the campaign, turn AI Max on in the copy, split the budget, run both for at least 30 days, and compare cost per booked job. The dashboard will flatter AI Max. The CRM will tell the truth. That is the discipline behind how we measure.
Meet all four and AI Max is worth a real test, most plausibly for exact-and-phrase-heavy accounts in bigger metros with untapped volume.
What should a painter lock down before testing AI Max?
Five settings, in this order.
- Brand exclusions. Add Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and every franchise painter in your market. None of those searchers want you.
- URL exclusions. Exclude your blog, careers page, and color guides, or final URL expansion will land a $9 click on “How to choose a trim color.”
- Locations of interest. Set them per ad group to your service towns, on top of the presence-only setting from Google Ads location targeting for painters.
- Review generated headlines weekly. Remove anything that promises something you do not do. I have seen generated copy invent “free color consultation” from a page that mentioned color in passing.
- Keep exact match copies of your money keywords. Google’s doc notes that in AI Max, broad keywords are no longer prioritized like exact. Add exact versions of “house painters [city]” and your cabinet terms so the searches you already win keep routing through the ads you wrote.
A September note: northern painters are shifting budget from exterior to interior, and interior search volume climbs into October. That is enough volume to read a 30-day split test, and a bad result will not cost you the spring rush.
FAQ
Is AI Max the same as Performance Max? No. Performance Max is a separate campaign type running across Search, Display, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail with almost no keyword control. AI Max is a set of features inside a normal Search campaign. I explained why painters should avoid Performance Max in Search Ads vs Performance Max for painters; AI Max is a smaller step in the same direction.
Will Google turn on AI Max for my painting campaign automatically? Only if the campaign used campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets, which are being migrated in September 2026. Dynamic Search Ads migrate in February 2027. A standard campaign on phrase and exact keywords is not being auto-upgraded, though Google will recommend it inside the account.
Can I turn AI Max off after enabling it? Yes. Search term matching switches off per ad group, and text customization and final URL expansion switch off at the campaign level. Expect a learning period reset if the campaign has been running on it for a while.
Does AI Max lower cost per click for painters? Usually, because the expanded matches include cheaper, lower-intent searches. A lower CPC means nothing by itself. The number that matters is cost per booked job, and it can rise while CPC falls.
The blunt version
AI Max for painters is Google’s push toward keywordless search, and the migration clock is running. It can work for a painting company with real conversion tracking, a heavy negative list, budget headroom, and a control campaign. It will quietly waste money for a painter who flips it on because the account recommended it. Lock down the exclusions first, run a 30-day split test, and let booked jobs decide.
If you want a second opinion on whether your account is ready, or whether something already got migrated without anyone telling you, book a call. Ten minutes in the campaign settings will answer it.
