The Birmingham painting market, honestly
Birmingham is built on a ridge, and that one fact changes how painting gets priced here. Red Mountain splits the metro, and the Over the Mountain side is 1920s and 1930s masonry: Tudors with half timbering in Mountain Brook and Crestwood, Colonial Revival in Homewood, English cottages on steep wooded lots where the downhill wall is three stories of staging before a brush touches anything. Drop back into the city and the median house dates to around 1965, with close to a fifth of the stock built before 1940, so the Forest Park and Highland Park bungalows are on their fourth or fifth coat and every one of them is a pre 1978 job. Add roughly 54 inches of rain a year and average humidity near 79 percent under a hardwood canopy, and the shaded walls fail long before the sunny ones do. We have never run ads for a painter in this metro. Under the one painter rule Birmingham is open, and the first crew that claims it gets both sides of the mountain.
What makes Birmingham different for painters
- 01
Brick is most of what you see, so the recurring money sits in everything that is not brick. Trim, fascia, soffits, shutters, garage doors, and on the older Over the Mountain houses the half timbering, decorative gable work, and casement sashes that price by the detail instead of by the square foot. Separate from that trim cycle is the decision job, where an owner finally coats tired red brick and buys a permanent change to the front of the house after weeks of research. Two different buyers, two different tickets, two different sets of search terms. Put them in one campaign and you will never see which one carries the account.

The failure mode in this metro is damp and shade, not sun. NOAA normals put Birmingham near 54 inches of rain a year with average relative humidity around 79 percent, and the mature canopy over the older neighborhoods keeps north and east walls from drying between storms. Mildew, and blistering where a damp surface got sealed under a film that could not breathe, show up on the shaded side years before the south wall asks for anything. That makes washing and prep something you can sell on its own merits instead of burying it in a bid, and it gives you a lead in service to advertise in the weeks when a full exterior is a hard close.

Jefferson County sits in one of the busiest severe weather corridors in the country, and it runs two seasons instead of one. Alabama records since 1950 count roughly 3,078 confirmed tornadoes, 7,838 hail events, and 18,435 damaging wind events, with Jefferson among the most active counties in the state, and the late fall stretch catches homeowners who assume the risk ended in April. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado southwest of Trussville on February 26, 2026. Hail and wind chew siding, trim, and fascia while the roofer takes the roof call and walks away from the rest of it. A storm campaign can idle at a low daily budget most of the year and spin up the week after an event, which is the cheapest way to be the first name a rattled homeowner sees.

The demand is moving south over the mountain, and the census data says it plainly. The metro reached about 879,000 people in 2025, up roughly 0.92 percent in a year, while Jefferson County itself lost population and Shelby County added more than 15,500 residents since 2020, about 7 percent. Chelsea has taken on more than 2,000 people since 2020, Trussville more than 1,000, Hoover about 900. New subdivisions down that corridor are aging into a first repaint with owners who moved in from somewhere else and have no painter in the family. Meanwhile the older Jefferson County stock is running prep heavy cycles that price nothing like a first repaint. One flat metro wide budget pays the same for both and tells you nothing.

One Birmingham
painter.
Birmingham is open as of this writing. No painter in this metro runs ads with us, we have no local numbers to show you, and this page is not going to make any up. What we are selling is the structure. The first Birmingham painting company in gets every campaign, keyword, and landing page we build for this metro pointed at one brand, from half timber and trim carpentry in Mountain Brook to first repaints going up in Chelsea and Calera. The second Birmingham painter who asks hears no, because dropping two local crews into the same Homewood auction only raises what both of them pay to reach the same homeowner.
Birmingham questions
Most of this metro is brick. Is there really enough painting demand to justify Google Ads?
Yes, and the brick is part of why. A brick house still has trim, fascia, soffits, shutters, porch ceilings, and doors on a shorter clock than siding, because those are the parts taking the moisture. Over the mountain you add half timbering, gable detail, and casement windows that are carpentry and prep before they are paint. Then there is full masonry coating work, which is a much larger ticket and a much longer research window, plus interiors and cabinets year round in a metro where a fifth of the city housing predates 1940. The demand is there. What is missing is a painter who has claimed the top of the page for it.
Can I run only the Over the Mountain suburbs and skip the rest of the metro?
You can. Campaigns are geo set by zip, so a crew that wants Mountain Brook, Homewood, and Vestavia Hills without the drive out to Center Point can bid exactly that. Two cautions. Tight geo on a metro this size means lower volume and a slower read on what is working, so the account needs a few extra weeks before the numbers mean anything. And the Shelby County corridor south of you is where the new rooftops are, so if you cut it out of the map on day one you are cutting the fastest growing part of your own market. We usually start wider, watch which zips actually book, then tighten around the answer instead of guessing at it up front.
