How to Recruit Painters for Your Painting Company in 2026
How to recruit painters: where painting contractors find crew, what job ads cost in 2026, Google's hiring ad rules, and why fall is the time to hire.
Published September 24, 2026 · PaintingPPC
How to recruit painters comes down to three channels that work and one timing rule. The channels are referrals from your current crew, local job ads (Indeed, Google, Facebook) aimed at a tight commute radius, and direct outreach at paint stores and trade programs. The timing rule: recruit in fall and winter for spring, because a painting contractor who starts hiring in April is hiring against every other painter in town.
I run PaintingPPC. We run Google Ads for painting contractors, one painter per market. I am writing about recruiting because I have watched good ad accounts get throttled by one thing: nobody to do the work. More leads do not help a company that cannot staff the jobs. We covered how many painters you need before running ads. This post covers how to actually find them.
Why is it so hard to recruit painters?
Recruiting painters is hard because demand for them is steady and the pipeline of new ones is thin. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 28,100 openings for construction and maintenance painters every year through 2034, mostly to replace people leaving the trade. The median annual wage was $48,660 in May 2024.
That median matters. It is the number a decent painter already knows he can get somewhere. If your posting says “competitive pay” and nothing else, he assumes it means below that.
You are not just competing with other painting companies. You are competing with warehouses, lawn crews, and anyone else hiring hourly help.
How to recruit painters: where do painting contractors find them?
Painting contractors find their best hires through referrals from their own crew, then through local job ads, then through direct outreach. Here is how I would rank the channels:
| Channel | Cost | Quality | Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crew referrals | Referral bonus only | Highest | Slow, unpredictable | Good painters know other good painters |
| Indeed sponsored jobs | Pay per click on a daily budget | Mixed | Fast | Volume is easy, screening is the work |
| Google Ads (hiring campaign) | Pay per click | Mixed to good | Fast | Restricted targeting rules apply |
| Facebook / Instagram job ads | Pay per click or impression | Mixed | Fast | Also has special employment ad rules |
| Paint store counters and reps | Free, just time | Good | Slow | Reps know who is looking |
| Trade schools, apprenticeships | Free to low | Green but trainable | Seasonal | Build a relationship, not a one-time post |
| Yard signs, truck, billboards | Already paid for | Mixed | Slow | ”Now hiring” line on assets you own |
Crew referrals
Pay a referral bonus to your own painters for anyone they bring in who stays. Pay half at 30 days and half at 90 so you are paying for retention, not a warm body. Pick an amount big enough that your crew actually talks about it on the job. The same mechanics we laid out in the referral program for painting contractors post apply, just pointed at hiring instead of customers.
Indeed
Indeed sponsored jobs run on a pay-per-click auction with a daily budget. According to Pin’s 2026 breakdown of Indeed pricing, free posts are capped and get buried fast, the minimum sponsored budget is $5 a day, and click costs for general labor roles often run well under a dollar. Cheap clicks are not the problem. The problem is sorting a pile of applicants to find the few who have transportation, show up, and can cut a line.
Paint store and supplier network
Your paint store rep talks to every painter in town. Tell them you are hiring and what you pay. The guy buying for weekend side jobs might want steady hours.
Can a painting contractor use Google Ads to hire painters?
Yes, a painting contractor can run Google Ads to recruit painters, but employment ads have restricted targeting in the United States and Canada. Google’s employment in personalized advertising policy bans targeting by age, gender, parental status, marital status, and ZIP code for job ads. Radius and city targeting are still allowed.
That catches painters who copy their customer campaign. If your customer campaign uses ZIP code targeting (see our location targeting guide), a hiring campaign copied from it can get flagged. Build the hiring campaign separately:
- Its own campaign. Never mix hiring keywords into a customer campaign. The conversions pollute your cost per booked job data.
- Radius or city targeting only. Set it to a realistic commute from your shop or typical job sites.
- Demographics left fully open. Do not touch age or gender settings.
- Keywords job seekers use. “Painting jobs near me,” “painter jobs [city],” “commercial painter hiring.” Then add the job words as negatives in your customer campaigns, which you should be doing anyway per our negative keywords list.
- A real careers page. Pay range, schedule, what you provide, and a short form. Not your homepage.
Meta runs its own special ad category for employment with similar limits. Pick that category when you set up the ad or it may get rejected.
When should painting contractors recruit?
Painting contractors should recruit hardest in late fall and winter, then onboard before spring. In most markets exterior work slows from October on, and painters who got laid off or had slow weeks are open to a move. By March every painting company in your town is posting at once.
Late September is the right time to start. Build the careers page, announce the referral bonus, and have job ads ready for when exterior season ends. Hire in January and February, train on interiors while it is cold, and walk into April with a crew that knows your prep standards.
What should a painter job post say?
A painter job post should say the pay range, the schedule, and what kind of work it is, in the first three lines. Painters skim. Hiding the pay loses the good ones.
What I would put in:
- Pay range, stated. If you pay above the local median, say so.
- Year-round or seasonal. Be honest. Winter hours are a selling point if you have them.
- Residential, commercial, or both. Repaints and new construction attract different people.
- What you provide. Company truck, tools, sprayers, paid travel time.
- Experience you need. Lead painter, prep helper, and apprentice are three different posts.
- How fast you respond. “We call back within one business day.” Then do it.
That last point is the same lesson as speed to lead for painters. A good applicant is a lead. He goes to whoever calls first.
FAQ
How much should a painting company pay painters in 2026?
A painting company should pay at or above the local market rate to compete for experienced painters. The BLS reported a national median of $48,660 a year for construction and maintenance painters in May 2024, and local rates vary widely by metro. Check current postings in your own city before setting a range.
Is Indeed worth it for hiring painters?
Indeed is worth it for volume when you need applicants fast, as long as you have time to screen. Sponsored jobs start at a low daily budget and general labor clicks are usually cheap. The real cost is the owner’s time sorting applicants, so use screening questions on the post.
Should I hire painters or use subcontractors?
Hire employees for your core crew and use subcontractors for overflow. Subs are useful during peaks but have other clients and cannot be counted on for baseline capacity. Classification rules for employees versus contractors vary by state, so talk to your accountant or an employment attorney.
Can I target job ads by age on Google or Facebook?
No. In the United States and Canada, Google bans age, gender, parental status, marital status, and ZIP code targeting on employment ads, and Meta restricts employment ads through its special ad category. Target by radius or city instead.
The blunt version
Ads fill a calendar. People fill jobs. If you are going to grow with Google Ads for painting contractors, recruiting has to run all year like a second marketing channel, not a panic in April.
If your ads are working and your crew is the bottleneck, or you want to plan spring spend around who you will actually have on payroll, book a call. We will look at both sides of the math.
