Google Ads Extensions for Painters: Which Assets Actually Book Jobs

Google Ads extensions for painters ranked: which assets to add first, which to skip, what they cost (nothing), and how they cut cost per click.

Google Ads extensions for painters (Google now calls them assets) are free add-ons that make your search ad bigger and more clickable: extra links, a tap-to-call phone number, photos of your work, your service list. They cost nothing to add, you only pay for clicks you were paying for anyway, and Google’s own data ties them to measurably more conversions. Every painting contractor running search ads should have five of them set up. Most accounts I audit have one or two, half filled out.

I run Google Ads for painting contractors, and assets are the closest thing this platform has to free money. Mid July, when every painter in your city is bidding on the same exterior searches, the ad that takes up more screen and shows a phone number wins clicks the smaller ad paid the same auction price to lose. Here is what to set up, in order.

What are Google Ads extensions for painters?

Extensions, renamed assets in 2022, are extra pieces of information Google attaches to your search ad beyond the headlines and descriptions. Your ad copy is the sandwich; assets are everything that comes with the plate. Sitelinks add clickable links to other pages on your site. Call assets add a tap-to-call number. Callouts add short trust phrases like “Licensed and Insured.” Structured snippets list your services. Image assets add a photo. Location assets pin your business address from your Business Profile.

Google decides which combination shows on each search, so you do not control the exact layout. Your job is to give it good options. On desktop your ad can show up to 6 sitelinks, and up to 8 on mobile, which can double the physical size of your ad on the results page.

Which assets should a painting contractor set up first?

Set up these five, in this order: call asset, sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, and image assets. Location assets too if you have a Google Business Profile, which you should.

The call asset goes first because painting is a phone-call trade. A homeowner with peeling siding wants to talk to a human, and on mobile the call asset lets them do it without ever loading your site. Two things matter here. Use a number you track, because a call you cannot attribute is a job you cannot cost out; that is the whole argument for call tracking. And schedule the asset for hours someone actually answers. A tap-to-call button that rings to voicemail at 7 pm is paying for the click and losing the job.

Sitelinks go second because they are the biggest visual upgrade. Write them around your services and your offer: Exterior Painting, Interior Painting, Cabinet Refinishing, Free Estimate. Each one links to the matching page, not the homepage. Add the two description lines under each sitelink; Google requires descriptions before it will show the larger formats. Google’s internal data says advertisers who go up to 6 sitelinks per campaign see up to 3.5% more conversions at a similar cost per conversion. That is not a fortune, but it is free, and free improvements compound.

Callouts and structured snippets take ten minutes combined. Callouts are 25-character trust builders: Licensed and Insured, Locally Owned, Written Warranty, Free Estimates. Do not claim anything that is not true; “24/7 Service” on a painting company is how you get a 6 am drywall question. Structured snippets use Google’s preset headers, and “Services” is the one that fits this trade: Interior, Exterior, Cabinets, Fences, Decks.

Image assets are worth the small hassle of meeting Google’s specs. Painting is visual. A clean shot of a finished exterior or your lettered van next to your ad does work no headline can. Skip stock photos; homeowners can smell them.

Do Google Ads extensions cost extra?

No. Assets are free to add, and a click on a sitelink or call asset costs the same as a click on your headline. Google also will not charge you for more than 2 clicks per ad impression. So the math is lopsided in your favor: same auction, same cost per click, bigger ad, more ways to respond. When a bigger ad earns a higher click-through rate, Google’s quality systems tend to reward it, which pressures your cost per click down over time. There is no version of this where filling out assets hurts you.

The only real cost is the risk of doing it lazily. Sitelinks that all dump to the homepage, callouts that repeat your headlines, an image asset with a blurry phone photo. Google picks from what you give it, and if you give it filler, it shows filler.

How much difference do assets actually make?

They are a meaningful lever, not a miracle. Google reports that advertisers who improve Ad Strength on their responsive search ads and sitelinks from Poor to Excellent see 15% more conversions on average, and assets are one of the main inputs to that rating. Independent benchmarks like LocaliQ’s home services data put painting clicks around $13 to $14, so anything that nudges click-through rate and Quality Score in your favor is worth real dollars at that price.

Keep the measurement honest, though. A higher click-through rate is a means, not the goal. The goal is the same as always: cost per booked job. Assets help by making the same ad spend produce more calls; whether those calls become jobs still depends on your search campaign structure, your landing page, and whether the phone gets answered. An account with perfect assets and no call tracking is a well-dressed mystery.

Which assets should painters skip?

Skip price assets, promotion assets, and app assets. Price assets want a fixed menu of prices, and no honest painter prices a job without seeing it; publishing “$X per room” in your ad invites price shoppers and arguments. Promotion assets are built for retail sale events, and “10% Off Spring Painting” in an asset slot reads like a coupon site. If you run a seasonal offer, put it in a sitelink or callout instead. App assets are for businesses with an app. You paint houses.

Also leave automated assets on but check what Google generates. Dynamic sitelinks occasionally pull an odd page; pause any individual auto-created asset that misrepresents you.

FAQ

Do ad extensions cost extra in Google Ads? No. Adding assets is free, and clicks on them cost the same as clicks on the main ad headline. Google charges for at most 2 clicks per impression, so a bigger ad with more clickable pieces does not multiply your bill.

How many sitelinks should a painting company have? Create at least 6 per campaign, each with both description lines filled in. Google shows up to 6 on desktop and up to 8 on mobile, and its data ties 6-plus sitelinks to up to 3.5% more conversions at similar cost per conversion. Point each sitelink at a specific service page, not the homepage.

What is the difference between extensions and assets in Google Ads? Nothing. Google renamed ad extensions to assets in 2022. Sitelink extensions became sitelink assets, call extensions became call assets, and so on. Older guides say extensions, the current interface says assets, and both describe the same features.

Should a painter use a call extension or a call-only ad? Start with a call asset attached to a normal search ad. It adds the tap-to-call option while keeping the path to your landing page for homeowners who want to look at your work first. Call-only ads force every click into a phone call, which suits emergency trades better than painting, where many homeowners research before dialing.

Ten minutes of free real estate

Assets are the rare Google Ads task with no budget decision attached. Fill out the five that matter, point sitelinks at real pages, track the calls, and your ad takes up more of the results page at the exact moment a competitor’s smaller ad sits beside it. At PaintingPPC this is week-one setup on every account, because it is free and it works. If you want to know what else your account is leaving on the table, book a call. If your market is taken, I will tell you.
