AI Search for Painting Contractors: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT

AI search for painting contractors: 2026 data on how ChatGPT picks painters, what actually gets you recommended, and whether it matters yet.

Published August 9, 2026 · PaintingPPC

AI search for painting contractors is the question of what happens when a homeowner skips Google and asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity “who should paint my house?” The short answer: AI assistants recommend very few painting companies, they lean heavily on reviews and consistent business data to pick them, and the same work that wins the Google map pack is most of what gets a painter recommended by AI. It is a real shift worth preparing for, and it is still too small to replace the channels that book jobs today.

I run PaintingPPC, a Google Ads agency for painting contractors, so my bias is toward channels you can measure to a booked job. That bias is exactly why I have been watching AI search closely. When the way homeowners find painters changes, the math I care about changes with it. Here is what the 2026 data actually says, minus the panic.

Do homeowners actually use ChatGPT to find painters?

Yes, and the growth is fast even though the base is small. One industry analysis covered by Search Engine Land found the use of generative AI for local business recommendations jumped from 6% to 45% of consumers in a single year. Homeowners are asking AI what a repaint should cost, whether their cabinets can be refinished, and eventually, who to call.

The catch is what the AI says back. That same report found ChatGPT recommends only about 1.2% of local businesses, against roughly 36% of locations that show up in Google’s local results. It also found that 77% of businesses ranking on page one of Google are never mentioned in ChatGPT at all. The AI recommendation pool is tiny. Getting into it is the whole game.

There is a second effect already hitting painters who rely on free traffic. Pew Research tracked real user behavior and found that when Google shows an AI summary, people click a traditional result in only 8% of searches, versus 15% without one, and click the sources cited inside the summary just 1% of the time. If your plan was “rank organically and wait for clicks,” AI answers are quietly eating that plan.

How does AI search decide which painting contractors to recommend?

AI assistants recommend painters based on the public record: review volume and sentiment, consistent name, address, phone, and hours data across the web, and third-party pages that mention the company. The Search Engine Land report found businesses recommended by ChatGPT averaged 4.3 stars, and that AI engines punish inconsistent business data harder than Google does. Reviews act as a filter. Below a certain sentiment level you are simply not in the conversation, no matter what your website says about yourself.

Here is how the platforms compared on how many local businesses they surface at all:

PlatformShare of local businesses recommended
Google local results~36%
Gemini11%
Perplexity7.4%
ChatGPT1.2%

Notice what is missing from the ranking factors: your ad spend, your keyword tricks, your “AI optimization” package from the agency that cold-emailed you last week. The models read what the internet says about your company. If the internet says little, or says it inconsistently, you are invisible.

Do the boring fundamentals harder, because AI search rewards the same evidence Google does, just with a stricter filter. That is the honest playbook, and none of it is new:

First, make your Google Business Profile complete and keep your name, address, phone, and hours identical everywhere they appear. AI models cross-check listings, and mismatches cost you more with them than with Google.

Second, run a real review routine. Ask every completed job, respond to everything, and protect your average. A 4.3 star average was the norm among ChatGPT-recommended businesses. A painter sitting at 3.9 with 22 reviews is filtered out before the model even considers them.

Third, publish pages that fully answer the questions homeowners ask AI: what interior painting costs in your city, how long an exterior job takes, whether cabinet painting holds up. AI assistants quote and cite pages that answer questions completely. This is the same content work I described in SEO for painting contractors, and it now pays twice.

Fourth, get mentioned in places that are not your own website: local news, supplier spotlights, association directories, community sites. Models weigh third-party evidence over self-description.

What I would not do is pay anyone a monthly retainer for “AI search optimization” as a standalone service in August 2026. The levers above are the levers. Anyone selling a secret beyond them is selling the word AI.

Should painters buy ChatGPT ads?

Not yet, unless your Google Ads account is already profitable and maxed out. OpenAI opened its self-serve ads manager to U.S. businesses in open beta in May 2026, and home services marketplaces are already inside ChatGPT, with Thumbtack and Angi both shipping integrations, per Stacker’s home services advertising report. Reported clicks run $3 to $5, cheap next to painting’s Google CPCs.

Cheap clicks are not the goal. Booked jobs are. A brand-new ad platform means no track record on lead quality, thin targeting history, and no proof those clicks turn into estimates that close. My standing advice from Bing Ads applies here word for word: secondary platforms are for painters who have already squeezed Google Search Ads dry, not for painters looking for a shortcut around them. When you do test it, wire it into call tracking from day one so every lead gets a source and a cost, the same way we treat every channel in how we measure.

August, for what it is worth, is one of the two decision peaks for interior work, so if you have spare budget this month, the proven interior campaigns deserve it before any experiment does.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT recommend my painting business? Yes, but the odds are currently low. ChatGPT recommends roughly 1.2% of local businesses, and the ones it picks tend to have strong review averages around 4.3 stars and consistent business information across the web. Improving reviews, listings, and third-party mentions is what raises your odds.

Is AI search replacing Google for finding contractors? Not yet. Consumer use of AI for local recommendations grew from 6% to 45% in a year, but most homeowners still search Google, and Google’s own results now include AI summaries. Treat AI search as a growing second front, not a replacement for search ads and local SEO.

How do I optimize my painting website for AI search? Write pages that completely answer one question each, in plain language, with real local pricing and process detail. AI assistants cite pages that resolve the question on their own. Pair that with a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings, and steady reviews, because models weigh what others say about you over what you say about yourself.

Are ChatGPT ads worth it for a painting company? Only as a small test after Google Ads is already producing booked jobs at a cost you like. ChatGPT clicks reportedly run $3 to $5, but there is no established data yet on whether those clicks become signed painting jobs. Track any test to cost per booked job before scaling it.

AI search is a reason to do the fundamentals better, not a reason to abandon what already books jobs. If you want your ad account and your tracking built so every channel, including the new ones, reports in cost per booked job, book a call and I will show you how we set it up.
